Everybody gets sick – it’s a fact of life. Nobody likes having to go to the hospital, but if you do find yourself needing to pay a visit, it helps to be at the best possible facility for the care you need.
Montreal is blessed with many different hospitals to serve the diverse needs of city’s community. There are research hospitals, children’s hospitals, psychological care hospitals and hospitals which focus on specific areas of medicine, such as orthopedics or childbirth. Of course, there are also general hospitals that cover most medical spheres. Many of the city’s hospitals are clustered together, with groups of two or three in the same small geographical area.
Montreal General
The Montreal General Hospital is part of the McGill University teaching network, which trains and develops new doctors and nurses in the province of Quebec. The Montreal General works closely with the Montreal Children’s Hospital, the Neurological Institute and the Chest Institute to provide a wide range of specialized environments for research and the education of McGill medical students. The General has one of only two Level 1 Trauma Centers in all of Montreal.
CHU Sainte-Justine
The Centre hospitalier universitaire Sainte-Justine is another hospital associated with one of the city’s medical schools. In partnership with the Université de Montréal, CHU Saint-Justine is at the forefront of research into obstetrics, the health of the mother and the health of children as they age all the way through to adolescence. Sainte-Justine is a large hospital with 495 beds, including a 90 bed pediatric rehabilitation center, the only one of its kind in the province.
Shriners Hospital-Canada
The Shriners organization is renowned for their work in children’s health, and the Shriners Hospital in Montreal specializes in pediatric orthopedics. This includes treating children with spinal disorders, bone abnormalities and problems with limbs and joints. The hospital is also host to two prominent research facilities in the field of genetics and joint diseases, and these have played a large role in several medical breakthroughs of global significance. The hospital is located just below Mount Royal park, and as such has run into space constraints, making the future of the hospital in Montreal uncertain.
Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal
The Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal is another part of the Université de Montréal’s teaching network. It is also the oldest hospital in Montreal, having been constructed in 1645. It was destroyed by fire and reconstructed several times, and is currently located near Mount Royal. The Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal has seen many significant medical events occur within its walls, including the first successful kidney removal, femur transplant, and ground-zero identification of an AIDS patient in Canada, believed to be one of the first in the world. This French language hospital also hosts a museum dedicated to the history of medicine in Montreal dating back to the founding of the city. This museum has over 20 000 artifacts detailing medical progress over the past 350 years, and there are regular lectures and presentations given by the museum’s guides.
