Quebec has a few extra holidays in addition to the national ones it shares with the rest of Canada.
This list includes all of the holidays in the province where banks and government offices are usually closed.
Quebec Holidays
New Year’s Day: The first of January is a national holiday to celebrate the new year.
Easter: In Quebec, the Easter holiday is a fairly important one, especially given the province’s Catholic past. Easter is traditionally celebrated the Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon, the first Full Moon of spring. This means that the actual date of Easter changes from year to year, usually falling in either late March or early April. Since employers usually have the choice of giving their employees the Friday before or the Monday after off, it’s important to check and make sure that the services you need are open on the day you need them. Most government offices will give both.
Victoria Day: This holiday celebrates the birthday of Queen Victoria, as well as that of the current monarch. It occurs on the Monday that is closest to the 24th of May. It is also sometimes known as National Patriots Day, or ‘La jour de la reine”.
Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day: The 24th of June, or the closest Monday, is reserved for the celebration of the ‘national holiday’ of Quebec. Essentially, this is a huge party weekend where people take pride in their province and reflect on the past.
Canada Day: July 1 is a day where people all over the nation display their love for their country. The Monday closest to this date will see almost every business in the province closed.
Labour Day: The first Monday in September is the traditional holiday given over to the working person, meaning business shutter their doors and people get to have one last BBQ before the cold of the fall season sets in.
Thanksgiving: Thanksgiving takes place the second Monday in October. It is not unusual to see businesses closed both the Sunday and the Monday, and sometimes the Friday as well. Thanksgiving is the recognition of what the early settlers to Canada had to go through, as well as a celebration of the harvest.
Christmas Day: The 25th of December is also a national holiday in Canada.
