While beaches might not be the first thing that comes to mind when most people think of Montreal, the city does actually have quite a number of sandy spots to offer those looking for a little time in the sun and some swimming too. Since the city is located on an island, there are a few places for inhabitants to maximize their fun in the summer time before the icy winds of winter come calling once more.
Sandy fun in the city
Parc Jean Drapeau is sort of a summer fun center for the entire city. Not only is it situated on the same two islands that host La Ronde, the Casino and the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, it also offers a beautiful public beach that is located near a pool and cycling and rollerblading paths. The park is easily accessible on the metro’s Yellow Line.
In the western part of the city, Parc Nature Cap-St-Jacques, located in Pierrefonds has a beach that is very family friendly. Beach volleyball and kayaking are available for those who want to do more than just soak up the sun’s rays.
A bit beyond the borders
If you feel like exploring outside of the city limits, you can definitely find a few more places where you will be able to sink your toes into the sand. The village of Oka, which is just northwest of Laval has several beaches open to the public along the banks of the Ottawa river. Train service is provided from downtown’s Gare Centrale and there is a shuttle bus from the station. A popular hot spot is Beach Club, which is located very close to the Oka National Park. Beach Club offers food and activities for families and partiers alike, as the BBQing of the daylight hours gives way to dancing in the sand until early in the morning.
A little farther north into the Laurentians, it is possible to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and explore the Rouge River. This river is most famous for its white water rafting, but it also hosts a surprisingly large number of clothing-optional beaches. It’s the perfect, private and secluded spot to let it all hang out and commune with nature.
Water parks
Sometimes you want the water without the sand. One of the best places to spend a day completely drenched and having a great time is the Bromont Water Park. Located about 40 minutes from the city on Autoroute 10, the park boasts a dazzling number of water slides and rafting activities. You can even just hang out all day in one of their relaxing wave pools. For those who would prefer to stay dry, there are mountain biking and hiking trails that lead all around the mountain.
